Off-campus Summer Field Research Opportunities

Listed below are brief descriptions of student summer field research positions. Click on the links (underlined & bolded words at the begining of each paragraph) to get more information for the named opportunity. Programs for undergraduates are listed first with opportunities for graduates making up the latter part of this list. Some programs may be available to both.


Kellogg Biological Station REU - many positions this summer for undergraduates to participate in ecological research. All of these are PAID opportunities! KBS REU (Research Experiences for Undergraduates) Opportunities for 2010 include: Four Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center REUs (Department of Energy) and five REUs at the KBS Long Term Ecological Research Site (NSF).

Environmental Protection Agency Internships - The Student Career Experience Program (SCEP) at the EPA provides students with PAID, semester-length, seasonal, or summer trainee employment in a position complimenting their academic studies. Upon successful completion of at least 640 hours of work and receipt of their degree, participants receive non-competitive eligibility for appointment to the Federal service for the type of position they trained for.

Marine Biological Laboratory Arctic REU - The Ecosystems Center of the Marine Biological Laboratory is seeking undergraduate applicants for several Arctic research projects. Positions are available to U.S. citizens or Permanent Residents only who are currently enrolled as undergraduates at U.S. colleges or universities (no graduating seniors). Successful candidates will participate in field research on either terrestrial or aquatic ecosystems in the Toolik Lake Research Natural Area on the North Slope of Alaska.

Environmental & Wildlife Research Internship with Global Vision International - Students gain valuable personal and professional development, fieldwork experience and new qualifications with an Environmental & Wildlife Research internship with Global Vision International after or during their studies. Internships are available for periods from 5 to 20 weeks on a variety of GVI programs within the fields of environment and wildlife research.!

Grizzly Bear Research Project, Montana -approximately 10 wildlife research internships positions available for a large, cooperative effort lead by the USGS and the University of Montanato to evaluate the ability of noninvasive genetic sampling to estimate the population growth rate of a grizzly bear population in northwestern Montana.

Conservation & Land Management Internship Program - an opportunity to begin a career in botany, wildlife biology, natural resource management and conservation. The Conservation and Land Management Internship Program places 75-100 college graduates in five-month paid internships to assist professional staff at the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), National Park Service (NPS), US Fish and Wildlife Service (NFWF) or US Geologic Survey (USGS). Internships are primarily located in one of the thirteen western states, including Alaska. Each internship is unique and may focus on botany, wildlife, or a combination of the two. Applicants with strong botanical backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply
