Denny Radabaugh is a behavioral biologist who has worked on the development of behavior in birds and comparative learning abilities and anti-predator behavior of fish. However, in recent years at Ohio Wesleyan, his focus has been on the biology of spiders. (Note picture of spider web at upper right.) Together with Ohio Wesleyan students, he has pursued such diverse topics as the predatory effort required to catch prey of different sizes, the effect of prey abundance on web structure, the respiratory anatomy and metabolic rates of spiders, and a scanning electron microscope study comparing the sensory structures of males and females. Radabaugh is also the liaison to the Columbus Zoo, at which many zoology majors arrange internships, independent studies, and summer jobs. |
| Courses taught:
Dr. Radabaugh currently teaches Zoology 115 (Animals and their Environments), a course that examines structural, physiological, and behavioral adaptations of animals to various environments; Zoology 343 (Animal Behavior), a course with a strong experimental orientation in which students design and carry out their own original studies; and Zoology 349 (Island Biology) a course that takes students to Ecuador's famous Galapagos Islands and to other exotic places in the neotropics. His advanced seminars have dealt with topics such as Predators and Prey, Conservation Biology, and Skeptical Inquiry. |
